Abstract
Ireland became the first country to adopt a comprehensive nationwide smokefree law. Scotland followed suit in March 2006 and the rest of the UK is scheduled to implement similar legislation in the near future.
The primary result from these policies is that secondhand smoke exposure among workers will significantly decrease; however, the new policy may encourage some smokers to try to stop smoking. The impact of smokefree legislation on smoking cessation indicators and the demand for cessation services will be reviewed in case studies in this presentation. Furthermore, results from a multi-wave cohort survey of smokers in Ireland, Scotland, and the rest of the UK will be presented including pre/post Irish smokefree law data and pre-smokefree law baseline data in Scotland and the rest of the UK. Following this presentation, the audience should have a better understanding of the following questions: 1) Do smokefree laws reduce secondhand smoke exposure?; 2) Do smokefree laws encourage quit attempts?; 3) Do smokefree laws increase the demand for assisted cessation services such as pharmacotherapy or counseling?
