Poster presentation:
Promoting smoke free workplaces: implications for stop smoking services

Andy Graham

Abstract
One of the key strategy areas for Fresh - Smoke Free North East is to reduce exposure to Second Hand Smoke (SHS) across the region. This can potentially have a 4 percentage point impact on smoking prevalence - far in excess of any other tobacco control measure, and we have worked hard both regionally and nationally to raise awareness and support for smoke free legislation which will protect people from the effect of SHS and encourages smokers to quit.

A total ban in all enclosed places in England comes into effect in Summer 2007. In Ireland there was an 8% drop in smoking prevalence when a ban came into force, while in New Zealand calls to the national quit line rose 45% in the first month. Evidence also suggests reduced smoking in the home as more people are aware of the risks of SHS and actively try to quit. It seems that SF public places is the extra incentive needed for the 70% of smokers who would like to quit.

With this in mind, it is vital that stop smoking services are ready to deal with increased demand for services. Ways to do this are to ensure excellent regional coordination, practice sharing, use of national branding to ensure recognition and promotion of resources such as the NCAA, which promotes effective no smoking policies in the workplace and ensures that stop smoking support is a key part of this.
