Abstract
Reports from countries where smoke free legislation has been implemented demonstrate an increase in the number of people quitting smoking immediately before and after implementation. The government predicts that 600,000 people will quit smoking as a result of the legislation for England and a proportionate increase can be expected in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

This legislation presents an opportunity to reduce smoking prevalence. In order to maximize this, it is essential that services plan ahead.

The answer is not simply recruiting more staff. Sufficient ready-trained staff may not be available and the increased demand may not be sustained. This workshop will give participants the opportunity to share ideas and develop new ones. It will explore ways of:

. getting the best out of the service we have already have

. encouraging people to quit NOW in advance of the legislation

. moving to less traditional venues to offer support to quitters - pubs, bingo halls etc.

. finding innovative ways of enhancing our services eg. offering training and resources to occupational health staff

. maximizing the captive audience presented by workplaces going smoke-free

. persuading PCTs of the case for maintenance or expansion of stop smoking services if necessary

By the end of this workshop participants will have:

. identified the opportunities presented by the legislation

. shared their ideas for addressing the increased demand

. developed an action plan for their services
