Poster presentation:
The success of the North East of England Pregnancy Stop Smoking Services
Gillian Wayman and Shirley Camsell

Abstract
The success of the North East of England Pregnancy Stop Smoking Services.

Aim of presentation:

To describe and share good practice regarding smoking cessation services for pregnant women and their families particularly in areas of deprivation where inequalities in health prevail eg Sure Start areas.

Objectives:

At the conclusion of the session participants will be able to identify key issues for consideration in developing pregnancy stop smoking services, be able to apply models of good practice in relation to their current service provision and make changes according to local need.

Methods:

The session will be in the format of a PowerPoint presentation, followed by an interactive workshop to identify problem areas, and encourage discussion/problem solving amongst participants.

Results:

The presentation will present results relating to best practice in stop smoking approaches with pregnant women.

This will include sharing published research conducted using social marketing techniques to identify barriers to cessation, and inform the development of an effective cessation program specifically tailored to meet the needs of pregnant smokers, and the evaluation of its success.

Also discussing how this "model" (identified by the HDA/DOH as an example of good practise) was successfully adapted across the other North East Pregnancy Services taking into account their individual client needs and geographical areas.

We will highlight issues that impact upon service development; identifying particular areas of difficulty in service provision and presenting examples of local, innovative stop smoking initiatives,
highlighting our successes and "failures" in our attempts to overcome these problems.
We will recommend ways forward, drawing upon experience of implementing change for services that may be considering different approaches.

The Pregnancy Services in the North East, where smoking prevalence is among the highest in England, have worked together towards meeting and in some cases exceeding, nationally set smoking in pregnancy targets.
