Poster presentation:
Successful and accesible - Stop smoking services provided by comunity pharmacies
Judy Loggie

Abstract
There is an increasing recognition of the potential for community pharmacies to add smoking cessation to their range of services. It is now a requirement of the new pharmacy contract essential services to provide information about the benefits of stopping smoking. Some Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) are including smoking cessation as a local enhanced service within the contract.
This presentation will describe how Stop Smoking Services and PCT pharmaceutical advisers, working with comunity pharmacists, have established successful and easily accessible stop smoking services in community pharmacies in the north east of England. We will cover the practical issues involved, the benefits to pharmacies and their role in contributing to the achievement of PCT stop smoking targets. We will share examples and experiences of:
Systems which allow direct supply of nicotine replacement therapy to clients who are exempt and non-exempt from prescription charges
Local enhanced service specifications
Publicising services and identifying referral pathways
Organising stop smoking services in a busy pharmacy
Success stories from stop smoking advisers in pharmacies
Complementing stop smoking services provided by GP practices
