Abstract
The Drop In Model of smoking cessation clinic was first piloted in the Teesside area in 2002. It stemmed from the innovative practice of a nurse prescriber in Greatham, a village south of Hartlepool, who was running family planning clinics on a drop in basis. After completing her smoking cessation training, she envisioned the setting up of a similar clinic for smokers. The first Clinic was a success and under the direction of the Community Nurse Manager in Hartlepool a coherent strategy for change was developed and the new style clinics were 'rolled out', staffed by health visitors working alongside smoking cessation advisers. Within a year the number of quitters doubled and since then Hartlepool has maintained a place as one of the top PCTs in the country in terms of the numbers of smokers accessing services and successfully quitting.

The Hartlepool clinics were featured as a best practice example in the White Paper Choosing Health. Most of the clinics are sited in areas of disadvantage. Timing and location of clinics are varied to promote patient choice. Smokers can be signposted to advice and guidance on exercise, healthy eating and stress reduction. The Clinics are congruent with government strategies to increase nurse prescribing, promote healthy living and break down the barriers between services.

This presentation will chart the rise of the Drop In Model, describe the clinic procedures and illustrate graphically the growth in the number of smokers assessed and quitting as the clinic model has been extended across the PCT area.
