Poster presentation:
A stop smoking service, dedicated to meeting the needs of mental health patients and the homeless
Paul Steele

Abstract
The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation has been providing Stop Smoking Support throughout Liverpool since 1994, through its community based project better known in Liverpool as Roy Castle Fag Ends.

The service provides a range of specialist support to ensure that it meets the needs of those people who live and work in Liverpool. Services include Community support, Hospital support, Workplace and Prison support, a young person's service and a dedicated helpline.

In 2004 two new services were developed, one aimed specifically at Mental Health Patients either living in Hospitals or attending day centres, and one aimed at Homeless people who attend centres on a daily basis. These centres are committed to reaching out and responding to the needs of homeless people. A pilot project was carried out within a Hopsital which houses approximatley 27 in-patients, and a homeless drop in centre which has around 36 service users a night. After the two projects it was found that the attrition rate for this group was much higher than in other groups.

In order to ensure that these already disadvantaged client groups receive the necessary support to quit, a new programme was developed after consultation with Mental Health workers and Homeless key workers. These programmes are designed to ensure maximum patient participation during the sessions. New activities have been included to keep patients involved. It is hoped that these changes will help maintain attendance and increase attrition.

The new structures were ready to be implemented in January 2006, and a number of Mental Health groups and Homeless centres are keen to have this support provided within their organisations. The presentation will include the results from these programmes and will share experiences of working with these client groups.
