Poster presentation:
Update on Improving access to stop smoking services for people with mental health problems
Sue O'Brien and Wendy Kite

Abstract
We would like to submit a poster presentation to update the poster we submitted to the 1st UK National Smoking Cessation Conference in June 2005 entitled "Improving access to Stop Smoking Services for people with mental health problems".

Update on 2005 Poster

West Surrey Health Promotion Service is currently conducting a formal evaluation of the West Surrey Stop Smoking Service work on "Improving the support for people with mental health problems to quit smoking in West Surrey". Preliminary findings should be available in June 2006.

New Project

Since the presentation of the last poster, the West Surrey Stop Smoking Service has worked with a local organisation, "Aspirations", whose role is to support mental health service users offering education and employment advice. This organisation was chosen as:

1. Service users were rehabilitating
2. As a result of attending weekly client meetings a stop smoking group was requested and formed

Several problems were associated with facilitating this group, including the following:

. Chaotic attendance due to work-related commitments and accommodation moves
. Variable quite dates, due to difficulty obtaining NRT and other medication issues
. High incidence of "weekend relapses" due to low level of support at weekends

As a result, the West Surrey Stop Smoking Service has concluded that while choice has to be offered, the most effective support for mental health service users is one to one support from specialist trained mental health smoking cessation specialists working to a strict protocol. Our Service has been experiencing success with this approach, which will be highlighted in the poster presentation.
