        Presenter(s)

Janet Ryder  Specialist Stop Smoking Advisor, Roy Castle Fag Ends, Liverpool

        Abstract

Aintree University Hospitals NHS FT and Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust were selected as pilot sites for the DH hospital stop smoking project and developed a campaign to increase referrals to the stop smoking advisors

The advisors are employed by the local PCT's stop smoking service providers, Roy Castle Fag Ends, Liverpool and Sefton Support.

        Objectives:

To signpost patients who smoke and their visitors towards the advisors and so encourage smokers to start their quit whilst in hospital.

        Implementation:

        1) Partnership established with Pfizer to provide marketing expertise.  "Time to Quit" materials were  produced including referral posters for staff, posters for patients and leaflets for visitors.

        2) Recruitment and training of stop smoking champions on the hospital wards to be advocates for the service.

The campaign significantly increased referrals.  There was a 60% increase at Aintree in the 8 months after the launch and 42% at Southport over 3 months compared to the previous year.  The larger Aintree service achieved 847 referrals in this period.

With a 4 week quit rate of approx 45% this means over 140 extra quitters.

Several other hospitals nationwide have taken up the campaign as a result of this success.
