        Abstract

        Author(s)

Nicky McKee, Rachel Blower and Joy Boyes

        Presenter(s)

Nicky McKee  Secondary Care Smoking Cessation Specialist, Dudley Stop Smoking Service, NHS Dudley

Rachel Blower  Secondary Care Smoking Cessation Specialist, Dudley Stop Smoking Service, NHS Dudley

Joy Boyes  Behaviour Change Intervention Officer, NHS Dudley

        Abstract

Encourage smokers to use NRT whilst in hospital and use the DSSS once discharged.

Encourage doctors and nurses to refer patients to the Hospital Service.

        Encourage staff to stop smoking.

        Method
Recruited two smoking cessation specialists to work exclusively within the hospital, who were able to:

Build- up a relationship with ward staff and engage them in the programme.

Raise awareness of the service to all staff and consultants.

Have access to patients as soon as they were admitted.

Give patients NRT via a PGD.

Book patients an appointment with the DSSS on discharge.

Offer a stop smoking service to staff.

The service was totally rebranded and launched to patients, visitors and staff with marketing collateral specifically produced for each.

        Results
An increase in referrals by staff.

An increase in patients attending the DSSS upon discharge.

        An increase in staff quitting.

The service fully embraced by hospital staff.

        Conclusion
The specialist advisors, who have been well received by hospital staff, have been extremely successful in raising awareness of the service. In return this initiative has proved to be highly successful in encouraging smokers to use NRT whilst in hospital and also seek help from the DSSS on discharge.

Source of funding: This project was funded mainly from the Dudley Stop Smoking Service budget. However, the marketing collateral was part funded by Pfizer.

Declaration of interest: This project was supported by Pfizer, who contributed towards the cost of the marketing collateral, as we used a branding concept designed by them.
