        Abstract
Just the truth about tobacco: The Filter Wales – a  unique and innovative service for young people on the effects of tobacco use and smoking

        Presenter(s)

Jamie Jones-Mead  Manager, The Filter (Young Person's Quit Smoking Service for Wales), ASH Wales, Cardiff

        Abstract

This innovative service was launched in January 2013 and is targeted to young people aged 11-25 across Wales.  The Filter Wales gives the facts about smoking in a non-judgemental and youth friendly way to target those who smoke or are in groups that are likely to take up smoking. The project is multi-stranded and is made up of a dedicated website, social media portals, text and instant message support, a helpline, training for professionals, volunteering and peer mentoring.

So far we have been delivering sessions all over Wales which include Cut Films workshops where we have gathered numerous short films made by young people for the competition.  On No Smoking Day on 13th March we ran an event at Aberystwyth University where we explored the financial cost of smoking with the students.  Kick Butts Day saw students at Yale College in Wrexham put themselves in body bags to demonstrate the effect that tobacco has with theme ‘Don’t let big tobacco take your life’.
We are hoping to train professionals working with young people from all over Wales and participate in many events across Wales to spread the key messages of the programme.
