        Abstract

        Purpose:
To determine the prevalence of smoking and the factors influencing the smoking behavior in students.

        Population and methods:
Across-sectional study including 1400 students from  private schools in Marrakech.

        Results :
The prevalence of smoking was 15.1%, 14.8% among middle school  and 15.4 % among high school. Prevalence among males was 20.1% and 9.4% among girls (p <0.0001). The  rate of smokers was 14.2% in sections 11-19 years and 41.3% in sections 20-23 years. This prevalence was more important if the mother (59.3%) or the sister (44.7%) were smoking. For other toxic habits, the rate of use of hookah was 16.1% and 12.6% for alcohol. The mean age of initiation was 11.9 years, with 73.9% of students who bought their cigarettes. The main reasons of initiation were curiosity and idleness with 51.7% and 37.4% respectively. For the dangers of tobacco, 56.6% of students mentioned cancer and 41% lung diseases, while 85.9% of students saw an antismoking message in the media. Only 14.3% of students knew about the existence of the Moroccan antismoking law.

        Conclusion:
It is important to target developing educational and informational programs against tobacco to be more accessible to adolescents.
