Abstract
Recruitment of a full time pregnancy stop smoking service advisor – to enable the Advisor to have time to develop and improve the pregnancy stop smoking service.

Stakeholder and user involvement
A key role for the pregnancy advisor included engaging with staff and users. This included Maternity and Early Years and Children’s centres, Leads. Two focus groups were also held with pregnant smokers to get their views on improving the service.

Identified Issues
The advisor examined current practice and looked at possible ways that the service could be improved.

Strategy
The Advisor developed a smoking in pregnancy strategy with support from TH Maternity and Early Years Sub group which is largely based on York and Humbers 10 action points strategy and incorporates local improvements.

Referral form
The previous referral form was redrafted and redesigned because Midwives said they wanted smaller forms in a pad that they could carry around with them. It also required the new pregnancy service details.

Care pathway
At the request of the head of midwifery a draft referral care pathway for midwives was also developed.

Training
The advisor provided a training session on smoking in pregnancy and using and provision of a CO monitor to participating midwives.
