Abstract
The workshop will take the form of a short presentation on the insight work carried out by the Department of Health, focusing on Routine and Manual workers and their smoking attitudes and behaviour. Insights have been gained from ethnographic research and from several qualitative research projects, to uncover motivations that are often below the surface. For example, motivation to quit for personal health reasons in this audience is generally low, but the impact on family, particularly children is motivating. The session will then cover insight into ‘cold turkey’ quitters and why this method of quitting is still so popular amongst smokers. This research informed the production of the ‘Quit Kit’ from the NHS, and the evaluation of the Quit Kit will be discussed. An interactive workshop will then be conducted to explore how national insight into Routine and Manual smokers is applicable in local areas, to inform local social marketing programmes. The workshop will close with a Q&A session.
