Tackling illicit tobacco - the industry hype and the reality

        Andrea Crossfield and Ann McNeill

        Presenter(s)

        Ailsa Rutter  Director, FRESH, Durham

Andrea Crossfield  Director, Tobacco Free Futures, Manchester

        Abstract

Tobacco taxation, the most effective tobacco control intervention available, is undermined by the availability of cheap tobacco products. Interventions to reduce the availability and use of cheap tobacco are therefore key to tobacco control and also to support smokers to quit.

This session will provide an update on the current UK situation around illicit tobacco and demonstrate the tobacco industry 'hype' around the issue and the need to keep abreast of developments to see the 'reality'.

The session will also cover the key evaluation findings from the North of England Illicit Tobacco Programme which was launched in 2009 and has been covering a population of 14.5 million. This will include the work undertaken by the UK Centre for Tobacco Control Studies.

It will also provide attendees with a free strategic guide to tackling illicit tobacco.
